Course Description and Agenda
PHTLS – 1 is an 8hr course covering emergency medical care in trauma (gun-shots, car accidents, falls, etc) situations where the first person on scene is not a paramedic or police officer, it’s you the neighbor, the person in the next car, that person who just happened to be there and can help keep a bad situation from getting worse. The course focuses on the steps you can take to save a life. Heavy emphasis is placed on bleeding control and airway management techniques that will keep your patient alive until help arrives. Students are encouraged to bring their personal first aid kits to compare and get ideas to make their kits better.
This course is certified by NAEMT – National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians. EMTS receive 8 hours of continuing education for successful completion of this course.

10:00 – 11:00 Scene Assessment, Safety, and Initial Patient Assessment
11:00 – 12:00 Kinematics – The Mechanism(s) of Injury
12:00 – 12:45 Lunch Break
1:00 – 2:00 Shock, Blood Loss, and Bleeding Control
2:00 – 3:00 Airway Management and Environmental Emergencies
3:00 – 4:00 Put it All Together – X.A.B.C.s and Providing Care Until Help Arrives
4:00 – 5:00 Final exam and course debrief.
